How to play Word Deduction

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Word Deduction. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Look at what changes after your first action.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
