How to play Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and Ladders gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Read the objective before making your first input. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
