How to play Backgammon

Choose a round of Backgammon and settle into its rules. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Use the example below to understand a decision. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
